Shadow is a polygenic trait. Snakes with the shadow gene have larger squares in pattern or blocky saddles with heavy melanin concentration along the dorsal scales. Head pattern and other blotches have black edges giving it a shadow appearance. Some have an eyebrow above the eyes. Shadow hognose all keep their dark look as they age.
