Shadow is a polygenic trait. Snakes with the shadow gene have larger squares in the pattern, or blocky saddles, with a heavy concentration of melanin along the dorsal scales. The head pattern and other blotches have black edges, giving it a shadow appearance. Some have an eyebrow above the eyes. Shadow hognoses keep their dark look as they age.
